NZDF response to White Island eruption – Update 2
Personnel and assets from the New Zealand Defence Force today provided contingency support for the recovery team that went to Whakaari/White Island.
This included two RHIBs with members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squadron and medics on board. EOD and crew from HMNZS Wellington were on standby to assist if required. A Seasprite helicopter was also on location to assist with transportation to Whakatane.
Our personnel have been providing advice and assistance to NZ Police in the ongoing recovery operation.
Yesterday, nine Navy divers joined the search for the two missing deceased and a Royal New Zealand Air Force P3–2K Orion carried out another surveillance flight over coastline and sea.
Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour said the NZDF continues to stand by to assist as requested by NZ Police as the search for the missing two deceased continues.
