NZDF delivers aid to PNG’s quake victims
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has delivered about eight tonnes of aid supplies to those affected by last week’s devastating earthquake in Papua New Guinea.
The supplies, which include 120 15-litre water containers, 750 collapsible water containers, 200 family hygiene kits, 200 shelter tool kits and 120 tarpaulins, arrived in Port Moresby this afternoon on a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft.
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on 25 February, killing at least 31 people. The quake disrupted power and communications and damaged roads, airports, and two main health facilities in the Highlands region.
Major General Tim Gall, the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand, said the emergency supplies, which came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (MFAT) emergency stores, would help address basic needs for water, shelter and sanitation.
“In the aftermath of any disaster, essential needs such as food, water, shelter and sanitation are greatly affected. We hope that these emergency supplies will help ease those needs,” Major General Gall said.
“We are working with MFAT and stand ready to provide further assistance if required.”
